AbstractThe growth of world production of oil and gas increases the risk of accidents resulting in harmful consequences for the population, economy, and environment. The numerical modeling is an important tool used to understand the behavior of the oil and gas plume from releases into the ocean, providing agility in the decision making in real accidents. Simulations of hypothetical blowouts of oil and gas from an oil well in Lula Oil Field, an important Brazilian's oil-producing region, are performed using a Lagrangian numerical model in order to determine the oil and gas trajectory along the water column in two different seasons of the year. In this model, the plume transport is initially determined by the initial dynamics of the mixture of its components. In a second moment, advection and diffusion processes govern the particles transport until their final fate. The evaluation of its performance in reproducing field experiments available is satisfactory, which supports the credibility in adopting it in realistic cases. The results of the simulations in Lula Oil Field show the oil and gas plume remaining near the discharge point along the water column as a consequence of weak ocean currents in this region. The oil droplets reach the surface and the hydrate shells are formed quickly around the gas bubbles, which do not emerge because the gas is fully dissolved into the environment.
